Description
**Received via Austin 311 Email** Citizen's email: "I am an Austin ISD parent. I drive by Lamar Middle School daily. I want to bring to your attention a significant safety concern at the crosswalk at Burnet Rd & Romeria Dr. The female crosswalk attendant brings traffic to a screeching stop every time the light turns yellow but before it turns red. I have even witnessed her frantically start to rush students across the intersection during this transition into the yellow light. This is a huge safety concern not to mention a significant LIABILITY concern for AISD. She could be injured herself, igniting a worker's comp or personal injury claim. A driver could be injured, which could potentially lead to litigation. Yellow light accidents are a prime target for personal injury attorneys that could lead back to AISD. And most importantly, we want to protect our children. I applaud her enthusiasm to get our children to school quickly but safety should be the priority, not her desire to affirm power over the intersection. Just imagine she is putting herself/drivers/students at risk every 3-5 minutes daily as the light changes to yellow. This issue has come up in neighborhood social media discussions and reported to the principal of Lamar Middle School, but it has yet to be addressed unfortunately. There are videos that have circulated of cars coming to a screeching stop trying to avoid hitting her as she enters the intersection as she waives her hands angrily while the light is still yellow. It's terrifying. I would urge you to address this significant safety concern before it leads to injury/tragedy. She should be trained to wait at least several seconds AFTER the light has turned RED before entering the intersection herself. If she cannot be patient enough to do this correctly, I would recommend replacing her with someone who places her safety as well as our students' safety in higher regard."
